Attention Men: Hydrate Your Skin

After thinking of what I could possibly write about for the guys in the class, I've decided I would talk about moisturizing. Regardless if you are male or female, everyone should moisturize his or her face (and body). Why? Because elements like cold weather and water (after showering and shaving) can cause your skin to dry out. Skin can become chapped and painful. Your skin will begin to feel very tight on your face. Moisturizers can help prevent the skin from drying out and helps deliver nutrients like Vitamin D to the skin. So yes men, you can and should moisturize too! Finding the best moisturizer can be a challenge; your face could be normal, oily, dry, or combination skin. A dermatologist can help determine what type of skin you may have. Here is how you can find out your skin type on your own:
1. After washing your face, dab your nose and forehead (t-zone) with a tissue
2. Determine your skin type:
Normal skin shows neither oil nor flaking skin. It should feel supple and smooth. If you have it, consider yourself lucky :)
Oily skin is characterized by the grease on the tissue. It is also common for a person with oily skin to have large pores and a shine.
Dry skin may feel taut or show flakes of dead skin. It is associated with small pores. Moisturizing is important for this skin type.
Combination skin is most common. It exhibits traits of all three of the above skin types. Usually, the skin is oily in the T-zone and normal to dry elsewhere.
Now time to find that moisturizer!

  1. My skin is sensitive so I find it difficult to find a good moisturizer for my face. I use the Clinique Dramatically Different Mosturizing Gel. I love it because it keeps my face hydrated and my skin doesn't react to it.

  2. I will have to pass these recommendations for men on! I've used a number of Clinique moisturizers and have to say, that they are the best! At least for my skin, they always feel light and don't cause breakouts. I really like their concentrated serum as well. Thanks for the beauty advice, Sam - love your blog!

  3. I would have to agree with the girls, Clinique is a great product and I am a loyal customer. Clinique is probably one of the only products that I have used that leave the skin not feeling oily or dry.

  4. I have never moisturized regularly, only after sunburns. I don't know why this was the case. But recently I started to after shaving, and the difference is really noticeable. The moisturizer I have been using is fairly standard Jergen's or Spectra stuff, though I may try Nivea now because I've always liked their products. Thanks!

  5. I can definitely admit that I have never been one to actively take care of my skin. Sunscreen has often been an afterthought and my 5-minutes-to-burn nose has probably paid for it. Furthermore, I've had an outdoor job for the past 5 summers, which has really increased my sun exposure (Hello farmer tan/burn!)

I know that skin care is a topic that's going to be coming up in upcoming speeches as well, so I'll try to use this valuable information as a little inspiration. Thanks!

  6. I have sensitive skin, and for the last few weeks have been using Nutra Replenishing Cream from Avon. It's really light and has a great smell, a product I would recommend.

  7. I recently started to use moisturizer on my beard and have found a lot of my itchiness has been reduced. I will have to give these products a try.
